Summer of Digital Love: Strandbeests!

This post is part of our Summer of Digital Love series, where we chill by the pool while chatting about our favourite hardware, magazines, websites, creative assets and digital esoteria!

Many people in the UK associate coastal visits with calm waters, sand sculpture and perhaps even a Punch & Judy booth…

…but how about THIS for a beach sculpture!?

The awesome kinetic sculptures by Theo Jansen are described on his website as ‘Strandbeests. Skeletons made from yellow plastic tube (Dutch electricity pipe) are able to walk and get their energy from the wind. They have evolved since their inception in 1990 and have been divided into 12 periods of evolution. Their properties determine this period.’

They’ve even evolved to the point where they can FLY!:

Have a look at Theo’s YouTube channel for more kinetic inspiration!
