Later this month we’ll run our explainer series for Photoshop (which requires a paid subscription) and GIMP (which is completely free).

The pre-requisities

This is a BEGINNER workflow explainer, so you just need to install and open the software. We’ll take it from there!

If you’re new to IT / computing, you may need help downloading and installing the software. Start with a search for ‘how do i install paintshop pro’ or speak with someone familiar with downloading and installing applications.

Why would I do this?

Being able to resize images is a basic process that’s an important step in lots of common image editing workflows, including:

  • Reducing the resolution of a full-size photo to use it on online
  • Reducing the resolution of a photo to attach it to an email
  • Reducing the resolution to save storage space
  • Increasing the resolution of a small / fuzzy image to make it clearer / suitable for use in a work or education project

In this explainer we open a large logo image and ‘make it smaller’ by reducing the resolution, ready to use it on the web or social media.

Let’s do it!

You can download the logo image used in this explainer in the section further down this page!

Good to know

The logo used for this explainer is stored in PNG format (refered to as ‘ping’). This image format is popular for logos as it supports transparency (a ‘see through’ background). Photos saved by digital cameras and other devices are commonly stored in .jpg (jpeg) format, which does not support transparency, or a ‘raw’ format which applies very little compression. Modern devices (including mobile phones and recent digital cameras) may save images as ‘heif’ files, though these are not supported by every app.

See geeksforgeeks for a straightforward guide to all the major image formats.

Where to next?

In the explainer we successfully resized the logo to make it ‘smaller’, but what if you need to make an image LARGER? Here are the additional options available on PaintShop Pro’s resize dialog box:

Generally speaking, if you would like to UPSCALE an image it will be best to ‘resample using’ the BICUBIC option shown, and to reduce resolution it’s best to use the BILINEAR option. Current versions of software, including this latest version of PaintShop Pro, also includes AI (artificial intelligence) upscaling which can offer impressive results for photos with ‘typical’ content (E.g. Faces / buildings / landscapes). Check out this video for the science bit!

If you’re interested in using software with dedicated AI upscaling options have a look at Topaz Photo AI 2:

You could also use a FREE online app such as airbrush.ai to upscale individual images:
